Lead singer (or lead vocalist) sing the main vocal of a song within a band and are usually the main focus within any group within a bands performances. They are often referred to as the “frontman” of the band and in publicity situations such as press or media interviews again usually gain most of the attention.
Having a great voice is certainly an asset but not a prerequisite for a vocalist and there are plenty of examples both current and in the past of lead vocalists who cannot sing, but nonetheless carry the band with the force of their personality.
Within the pantheon of rock stand out lead vocalists include Brain Ferry, Tina Turner, Freddie Mercury, Blondie, Robert Plant, Axel Rose, Bon Scott and Ozzy Osbourne to name a few. Modern day examples include Brandon Flowers, Mathew Bellamy, Liam Gallagher and Robbie Williams.
